The state of Kansas had two income tax rates: 3% and 4.9%. All incoming earned in the states is subject to these tax rates. Kansas revised its income tax system in 2013 which reduced both the rate of tax and tax brackets. If you are a single taxpayer or file your taxes separate you are subject to the following rates:

  • 3% on the first $15,000 of income.
  • 4.9% on all income between $15,001 and $30,000.

If you are married and file jointly you are subject to the same tax rates, although the income amounts are doubled. Tax brackets are set to reduce again in 2014 to 2.7% and 4.8%, which will follow a reduction scheme scheduled until 2018. Generally tax returns are to be filed by the 15th of April, if that date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or holiday. If that situation arises it would be due on the next business day.

Residency

Regardless of the state of employment if you live in Kansas you are considered a resident. Length of time away from the state does not matter if you intend to return to Kansas you are a resident. If you are a resident for the full year you will have to file a Kansas Individual Income Tax Return if you are required to file federal taxes or if your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is larger than the total standard deduction allowed by the state.

Example: if you are a single tax payer over the age of 65 who has an AGI under $6,100 you are not required to file a state return. Married couples filing jointly are not required to file a return unless the total AGI is more than $10,500.

You have to file as a Kansas resident and all income is required to be reported no matter where the income was earned. If you have incoming earned in another state and the state that you are employed in taxes you, you should fill out the interview section of your Kansa income tax return and figure out any credits for taxes paid to the other state. W-2 copies are not considered proof and you cannot claim credits if the other states does not require a return.
